Charging problems, 3.0----140hp

My '85 VIP I/O quit charging. The regulator is mounted on the rear of the alternator. Is there any way of checking each, or do they have to be replaced as a set? I took the alternator off and cleaned the contacts, etc. to no avail.<br />I checked one website, and it said there were Delco and "Mondo ???" alternators used on these boats, how can I tell?<br />Any info is GREATLY appreciated.<br />Steve W.

Take it to an automotive rebuilder. They will understand it is marine. They can test and repair it as needed.

I have an 84' VIP that had the same problem. Take the alternator to O'Reilly or Napa, have them test it. If it is bad, they can have one to you that afternoon.

Thanks Guys, sometimes the best solution is the simplest, and the one you wouldn't think of!!!
