I've got a 1990 200 that I reccently purchased used. After 4 or 5 times out on the water the tach started acting up (needle jumping all over the place). After a few more outings it completely stopped working and now the battery is not charging. I'm thinking rectifier. How do I go about pin pointing the problem?

have you gone to CDI's web site? check out their FAQ's on troubleshooting components, it very well could be rect/reg or the stator or both! a bad rect can blow out a stator, I believe the tach signal comes before the regulator but the reg is combined with the rectifier, i'm not sure if tach is using post rectified pulses, or direct from the stator either way the grey wire for the tach come from the rect/reg, the diodes in the rect are semicunductor typically diodes short across there PN juction (shorted doided) if they open it is because they have gone way beyond there power disapation rating and burn which would typically result in the dialectric epoxy the unit is filled with looking melted I would suspect the rect/reg would have been a hard fail because they are electronic components, the stator could be a progressive failure it is just coil windings, shorting out slowly, I would check the stator charging coils you can do a simple ohm check and compare it to CDI specs even though it may still be an OEM STATOR they have a doc on resistive readings of there units and OEM units On another note if your battery connections are loose or you have dead or weak cells and the rct/reg can't output what it needs to it can and will over heat and die! never run your engine without a battery or use a severly under charged battery, always use nuts(not wing nuts) on terminals!

Also check for loose flywheel magnets. All of mine had migrated to one side of the flywheel. Check for dripping goo out of the bottom of your stator windings - a good indication that overheating has occurred. If the stator is your problem, it would be a good idea to replace the regulator/rectifier at the same time.

If the stator was bad would the motor run at all? I had to jump start it a few times when the batterey was dead and it would run fine on its own after being started.

The charging system and the ignition system are normally independent of each other.

There are 4 points of failure in your stator the front power coil the 2 rear ignition charge coils and the charging sys coils typically the dripping goo will come fcrom the 2 ignition coils rear and the front power coil if those fail motor will not run the charge coils are the copper looking windings. Yes the motor will run with the charge portion of stator bad. A simple ohm check of the coils can determin that but start with your statorand work foward in your troubleshooting ipersonally would not jump start my motor unless it was an emergency there will always be a loose connection point with jumper cables the charging system is designed to maintain a battery not bring it back fcrom near death you should hang a charger on the batteies bringem back to fcull charge
