Charging Question

OK, strange question- I have a 2 bank charger on my boat- My main battery of course is the only battery connected to the motor - My second battery which is there just to power a couple of non esentials (sp) but is the second battery connected to my onboard charger. The second battery shows a increase in voltage after i run the motor  Does the motor somehow charge both since they are connected by just the on board charger??

Re: Charging Question

voltage will travel to anything that is connected together. If they are connected through the charger then a small amount of charge will pass through it when the engine is running.

Re: Charging Question

Always isolate electrical path that is not suppose to exist. If you suspect your motor battery is charging the second battery, get a multimeter and check for continuity from positive post of first battery to the second battery.

Makes sense
Sure not complaining about that little bit of extra juice going into my "extra" battery :D

Re: Charging Question

You failed to mention how much of an increase you are seeing and where you are taking the measurement. Dual, triple and four bank chargers have isolated outputs so unless there is something wrong with the charger (isolation diodes) what happens on one bank should not be reflected on another.

Only talking about .2 - .4 volt increase after running steady & fairly fast for 1/2 hr or so, thats just showing up on my Lowrance X87 thats hooked up to the second battery so i figure thats just "close"-
Was just kind of happy to see that slight increase

Re: Charging Question

Although the purpose of a diode is to act as a one-way valve, where there is unrestricted current flow in the forward direction, there is a tad bit of reverse leakage.

In a case like mine thats not a bad thing is it?

Re: Charging Question

Hey Boss, now I suppose you have a generator running, battery charger on 2 banks, and one bank is reading slightly higher than the other while underway?

No, only thing connecting the two batteries is my on board two bank battery maintainer/charger
