Charging?

The reading from fish locator/GPS says my 1979 70hp Johnson is only putting out about 12.3 volts when running wide open. My gauges on this boat are pretty old so I'm relying on what my locator is reading.
I just put a brand new starting battery on board when I was getting these readings.
Is that okay because the battery has a full charge?

There are two possible scenarios. One, the alternator is not working. Or, two, you are using more juice than the alternator can make.

Would a cooked rectifier cause it to not charge? My Tach went out on the same trip.
