Chart plotter built in map

I am looking at acquiring a small chart plotter for my boat. Most units come with a built in map, but also can accept map cards. Does any one know how good the built in maps are for the Garmin 440 series, the Humminbird 300 and 500 series, the Standard Horizon CP 190 series, and the Sitex 95 series are?

In one instance (can't remember which one) the built in map has a resolution of 30 meters per pixel, which seems kinda worthless to me.

I don't want to spend $400-600 for the plotter only to find I have to spend another $200-300 to get decent charts.

Most background maps are a basic navigational system. They should all be complete with decent navigational information, including channel markers and beacons, shoals, inlets, etc. The SD card maps of defined areas usually go into greater detail and will override the background map if markers have been added/deleted/moved after the background map has been programmed. They are worth the money, but I have never seen one over $125 (but I run a Garmin). They also include a lot more detail as well as land based info (ramps, marinas, hospitals, etc).

Last December I sprung for a Garmin 546S (chartplotter with sounder combo). The charts are excellent (at least for Galveston West bay). I am extremely happy with this unit. My last Garmin (185S) was still running after 11 years. I just wanted a faster, bigger, cooler machine, and I definitely got it.
