cheap way to upgrade streering?

I have a 1969 Chrysler 35 hp motor on a 14' fg boat with the old style clothes line steering system.

What is the best way to upgrade my steering to a newer style system? Is this teleflex nfb stuff my only option? Can someone give me an idea of rough costs to update?

Anyone know of any good project links that deal specifically with older steering system upgrades?

My engine is a simple outboard with no power tilt n trim or anything like that. I just want very basic steering, no hydraulic or power anything....

Thanks,
Pat

Look here at the iboats store, prices are very competitive.
You may still be able to get a rack and pinion system but I would spend the little bit extra and get the teleflex.

Those are really the only options I know of.

1st does your motor have the tilt tube, to receive the steering cable? if not then we have to figure out what you need on the transom. for the engine connection. the helm and cable is relatively inexpensive. the mounts and connections can get expensive.

Is your cable over pulley system trashed? Very simple and reliable as long as you do the occasional maintenance. Components are relatively inexpensive compared to modern systems.
