I have a 97 Johnson 40 hp on a 97 Grumman aluminum bass boat and get a check engine alarm that will go off about every 5-10 min but the boat runs fine and has been checked out by technician any ideas on how to fix this would be great.

See if you can find a loaner gauge and try that. OMC had probs with those gauges back in those days doing that. Been there.

Mine did the same thing. Did it over a period of time. Had it checked by an outboard tech said it may be the gauge. Did it so long that I started to ignore it, like the boy who cried wolf. Ignored it one time to many when the engine overheated or the VRO went bad. Be careful to resolve the issue,do not let it go on. I switched gauge and still had the issue. Replaced the VRO and that solved the problem, that was after a rebuild.

there is nothing in the a Johnson 40 that can turn on the Check Engine light. Chances are it is a bad gauge or somewhere there is a short to ground in the wires to the gauge.

To elaborate on what Seahorse said....the Check Engine alarm was only used in V6 motors of that year. On the V6 motors it was a fuel restriction alarm.
