Check engine light/warning horn

Recently bought a bass boat with a 1996 Johnson Fast Strike carbureted engine. Engine runs pretty well, but the three times I've taken it out I get a check engine light and warning horn sounding. Hasn't ever lost power. Trying to track down a fuel restriction, I replaced the anti-siphon valve, fuel pickup line, added a canister fuel filter, cleaned the fuel filter/strainer on the engine, and replaced the fuel line and primer bulb from the tank to the engine. Now when I start the engine in my driveway, I get the normal check tones and warning lights, which then go off and then I get a continuous tone for about 10 seconds and a check engine light. When the horn goes off after 10 seconds or so, the check engine light stays on. I've tried disconnecting the wires from the vacuum switch which I understand triggers that alarm and check engine light, but the light stays lit. I've also disconnected the vacuum hose from the vacuum switch and still the check engine light stays on. My thought is that by disconnecting the vacuum switch, the warning light should go off and since it doesn't, maybe I have a bad warning light/alarm horn. Am I totally off base here?

Those alarms are triggered by a grounding of the alarm wire. So look at the tan/orange wire from the vacuum switch and see if it grounds somewhere. Look for melted wires as well.
