Hello, new here I tried to search the forums to find the answer to my question but not really anything came up that pertained to my question.

Last year we purchased this 2007 Caravelle 187LS with the Volvo 4.3L GXI engine and the first weekend out we had to replace the dreaded $900 Volvo steering cylinder. And the following weekend the original serpentine belt kept throwing off so it was replaced as well. Then the following weekend the starter went out while putting the boat back on the trailer, whew talk about luck! The hour meter which is OEM equipment in the tach gauge shows only 220 hours on it.

I had the boat serviced and winterized last fall and the only thing they told me was that I needed to find what is drawing on the battery. They replaced all the fluids and oils and serviced the outdrive as well. There was no mention of excessive play in anything but I would like to make sure before we take her back out on the water this season.

My question is somewhat twofold. First what is the acceptable play for side to side movement when someone holds the steering wheel in place and another wiggles the sterndrive left and right?

Second, what is the acceptable play when the sterndrive is grasped by the skeg and lifted up?

I assume that Volvo Penta designs some sort of play in these so they are not tight. I have approximately 1/8" when I lift the skeg and about 1" of left to right travel. This seems a bit more than my old Mercruiser Alpha One drive.

Thanks for any help!

I have DPS-A and the play is exactly the same, and has been like that for years.

Turning the drive left to right play: None
Lifting up and down: none to very little.

Draw on the battery: maybe the radio? or depth finder?
They both can draw even when turned off.
Test: undo the ground at the battery, test light installed on the battery lug and the end of the cable. Is the test light on? Then somethings drawing power. One at a time remove the fuses from the fuse block, then when the light stops glowing that will be the problem.
