Hi there. I am going to try my hand at some restoration on a few outboards I have and want to start with my 1955ish Johnson 15. Compression is solid. How do I check for spark? Do I use the exsting wires? and if I have no spark, what would I want to check next? As you can tell, I am a complete novice at this!

I will be coming for lots of help!!

Re: check for spark and common causes?

2 ways to check spark. i recommend going to a auto parts store and buy a spark tester. they cost about 15 dollars. one end hooks into the plug wire and the other onto the plug. if its adjustable try to set it to the same gap as the plugs are supposed to be set. cause i'm a cheapskate and i would rather spend money on gas i take a screwdriver pull the wire off the plug, stick the screwdriver into the end of the wire then hold it close ( slightly less then 1/4 inch)to the block or something that is grounded to the engine. watch the screwdriver dosent actually touch the block. you should see a bright blue spark while cranking the engine. if its yellow or orange the spark is not powerfull enough. oh if you do the screwdriver method use a insulated screwdriver one with a plastic handle and good idea also to wear rubber or plastic gloves otherwise you might feel the spark as well.
