The year before last, I winterized my boat improperly and pooped out a block casting plug! I put a new plug in and fortunately no damage was incurred internaly. That beign said, this year I took winterizing seriously and did everything I was supposed to (drained and refilled fluids, fogged cylinders, even filled the block with anitfreeze, etc.). This winter was exceptionally cold for long periods of time. I went and checked my boat (I have a searay with 4.3 and Alpha 1), and everything in the engince compartment seemed to be good, no pooped plugs, no cracks) I then moved to the outdrive and found my exhaust bellows was destroyed! I just had my bellows replaced last season. The shift and U joint bellows seems to be fine, is it okay just to replace the exhaust bellows and am I going to have to pull the outdrive again to do this?

Ayuh,... You can replace just the 1 bellows, but the drive has to come off to do it...

This is what i was thinking. I dont see how a bellows can shred itself just sitting. Water shouldn't even be in it. Maybe if you left it for 10 years and it got brittle and nasty... but not over a winter.

No, shredded like when you pull on the pieces, it falls apart even more.

Have seen this on 2 boats done at the shop I worked at. Sent the other 6 kits back to Mallory. Now only use OEM.

i checked , it was a mallory kit. If I use that bellows that only attaches to one end do i still have to remove my outdrive. I hate doing that, and if I must I might as well replace the other bellows and the ujoints while im at it . Is it possible that the exhaust bellows was full of water and froze? Not sure how this could of happend otherwise.

Nope, the bellows was junk. Mallory replaced the complete bellows kits for us, and also paid labor to replace all bellows and hose, even though only the exhaust bellows failed.
We replaced with OEM, and never used another bellow by Mallory again. it was only the exhaust bellows that caused problems, and on one of the boats we did, one boat never touched the water, the bellows just failed over the winter here in the PNW.
Just get the OEM parts, and you don't have to worry. Or keep buying the aftermarket junk and keep hoping.

Where does Sierra fall? While we're on bellows subject and not trying to jump the thread.
