Do you have a resevoir? That would be the easiest way to check it, it should be in the engine compartment somewhere. If not, you should have three plugs on your outdrive. They look like big flat headed screws. On the port side near the top of the drive(not on top) there should be one of those screws, you can pull it out and if oil begins to run out then the drive has enough oil in it. Be sure to use a new washer and put the screw back in. Be sure to have the drive level when you check it.

Unfortunately it does not have a monitor. You indicating remove vent screw, see if oil runs out. Thanks vipzach.

The screw in the cap on the outdrive should be a dipstick.

Don is talking about the one in the top of the outdrive, that one is supposed to have a dipstick. Mine does not and I always forget that other people's probably does still have one and would be less of a mess to check.

mine also does not have one. How 'bout removing the vent screw with the expectation that gear lube will dribble out meaning ievel is OK,...however if gear lube not coming out of vent screw then ..does it need additional?

Since you don't have the reservoir or the dipstick, which means someone replaced the drive with a newer model, then you have to fill and check the drive like the older Alpha drives. Fill it from the bottom till it just comes out the vent plug.

Nobody here has asked how long it's been since the lube has been changed. I like to start the season with fresh oil so when I check it, I can tell by the color if something is happening. I use Quicksilver hi performance gear lube, nice metallic green, so if color changes, it's easily noticed.
