Checking out used Mercury

I have the opportunity to purchase an older Tri-hull with an 85 H.P. Mercury outboard. I do not know the exact year of the outboard but it is the old tall Mercury with a logo that says "Thunderbolt Ignition." The motor looks good and supposedly runs good. Even though this is an older motor, were they good motors and are parts still readily available to repair them? I already have arrangements to have a compression test done. What other things should I check to help ensure I buy a good motor?

the best test is a water test. if possible launch<br />the boat and see how she performs under load.<br />this motor can sound fine while running on muffs<br />even if it's only running on a couple cylinders.<br />compression test is good idea also. parts are<br />readily avail. and lot's of us have these old<br />mercs too ('70 1150)<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

Thanks. The dealer told me I could take it out on the water and they would do whatever test I wanted to include a compression test. I have heard of people getting a spark test done. What exactly does this comprise of and should I get one?

you're already ahead of the game if you can water<br />test her. only time other tests are really that<br />important is if'n she don't perform well on the<br />water. open her up and you'll know exactly what<br />your buying.<br />enjoy and safe boating,<br />M.Y.
