hey gents !

i read the manual for checking the spark timing on this engine. when i understand it right the basic timing on the distributor is 0 deg and the final timing is adjusted by an electronic module dependable on the revs ( spark advance)

the manual calls for a module to shunt the spark advance module. is there a way to check the basic timing ( o deg ) visually?

is there a marking on the distributor or elsewhere which indicates the 0deg basic timing ?

When you check the timing, the shunt locks the timing so it doesn't change while setting. When the shunt is installed, it moves the timing which is why it is set at 0? When the shunt is removed, the timing will go to it's normal range. Meaning, you have to use the shunt and the engines timing marks to set the timing with the engine at idle.

The instruction for setting the timing is also wrong in the manual of the procedures for setting it. Have a look at this thread.

Ayuh,.... Usually on the crank dampener, 'n the timin' cover...

Ya need a timing light to do the deed...

thanks don, thanks, bond !

excuse my stupidity - does the electronic spark advance module move physically something inside the distributor ??? i thought that you can check/set for O deg on the distributor vs crankshaft position when ussuming the spark advance module works right.

let me tell you the story : my 21ft 3300lbs dry cabinboat is equipped with the stainless laser II 14/1/4x17 and revs only to about 4100 rpm.

a 3.0 for a +3000lbs boat might be a little less engine so i want to buy a 14/1/x15 stainless here to get the correct WOT rpm.

but now some on the marina say that this engine with a 1.97 sx drive should even on a heavy boat spin easily a 17 pitch and maybe my timing is off. i doubt it because the engine does not make any signs for that and also pushes 5-6 adults on plane with this boat so i guess it has the power it should have - but would like to check the timing before i finally buy a new prop.

the plan was to quickly check the basic O deg timing on the distributor visually and then with a timing light to check if the timing advances when i increase rpm,s . if yes i can assume all works fine. the hope was to do this without the shunt which is in germany not to get easily.

but i,m wrong and cannot check anything without a shunt and only with a timing light ?

Ayuh,... Correct,.... The timing is set, With a timing light, 'n the ignition controls it, Electronically there after...
