I read several posts about checking the spark etc.
I'm curious (in regards to outboards), is simply checking it with a spark indicator sufficient. Or is it also necessary to also check the strength of the spark by disconnecting it slightly to measure arc intensity...

Wanting to do a thourough check of the switchboxes.

Hi KCLOST....the Merc listed in your post should jump a 1/2" gap with a strong hot white spark. Sorta like a lighting bolt. If it's thready or weak, you may have a weak coil or switch box going south. The strong spark will be readily evident.

Darn good point Trent....probably one that's not brought up enough here on the forums.

Ya' see KCLOST....these puppies gotta turn at least 300 to 400rpm to produce a good strong spark...WITH THE PLUGS IN. A light battery, snall amperage or one thats' run down, may not have the ooph needed to get a good spark test.

DON'T KNOW WHAT I SPEEK BUT I READ A BOOK, THE SPARK ON A OUTBOARD COMES FROM THE MAGNETS ON THE FLYWHEEL PASSING SEGMENTS OF A STATOR RING SEGMENTED IN TO (COILS) THUS SETTING TIMEING TO THE RPM OF THE FLYWHEEL, ON LAWN MOWERS SIMILAR SYSTEM THE CORRECT ALIGNMENT OF THE FLYWHEEL TO THE BLADE,THUS BALANCED MAKE OR BREAKS THE SPARK.?
