i have a 66 rude selectric shift with a gen and starter was wondering if there is a way to check to see if the gen is charging the battery?

Sure. Check the battery voltage with the engine running and not running. If the voltage is higher with the engine running, it's charging. If it ain't, it ain't.<br /><br />c/6<br />Hooty

BTW, same check works for vehicles also to determine if alternator is working.

with engine running you should be getting at least 13.5 volts across the battery terminals
