chev tracker alternator

my tracker (sunrunner) keeps killing alternators, not funny any more.

my alternator light lights up when the car is first turned to ignition on, then goes off, does not turn back on even if the alternotor stops charging.

battery voltage is 12.2-12.5, tried with 2 different batteries, when running, it slowly creeps from 12.5 to 13v. if I leave the car run more than 20 seconds, the alt will fail, charging voltage drops to battery voltage

in about 5 seconds of running, the armature pulley gets super hot. It does not do this if I remove the excitation and warning lamp plug. Reconnecting either wire it jumps to 14.5V for about a second then drops to 12.5 and starts to creep up to 13v.

With an ammeter connected, I get about 18-20 amps of charge.

I strongly suspect there is something wrong in the warning computer, but I cannot find it's location.

Any ideas would be appreciated, I'm drawing a blank. (does not happen often, I'm an electrical engineering technician)

Re: chev tracker alternator

I'm sorry Bandit I forgot about this.

After looking at the wiring diagram I don't see any thing that would cause your alternators to repeatedly fail. there is a possibility of bad connections not letting the amprege to get to the battery causing the alternator to fail. Could be pis pour remanufacturing also.

Where are you getting you alternators? Please don't tell me AutoZone.

There are no control modules in the ckt. Everything is intigrated into the alternator.

Here is a wiring diagram of the starting and charging system. Hope it helps. It's two pics, if you'll print them then put them together it's easier to tell whats what. They came from two pages, had to print each page seprately.

hey thanks, thats a great schematic you have there, too bad I cant make out some of it but I'm getting closer... I still dont understand why the armature gets smoking hot though...

is that a ground point just above the battery light? connected to 12v source?

No, That is 12v source above the light from a fuse. The light is being fed 12v via the fuse to the bulb and is then grounded in the alternator to illuminate the light. When the alt starts charging the ground is lost causing the light to go out.

If you print the schematic then scan it into your photo program on your computer you can zoom in on different parts of the pics for more detail. Or get a magnifying glass.

Re: chev tracker alternator

took it out and checked a bunch of things, seems the alternator has a coat of varnish on it so it's nice and shiney, well insulated

You never did say where you got the alternators from???

My Suzuki Sidekick is what your tracker is cloned from. REPLACE and properly tighten the serpentine belt. The hot armature/pulley tells me that it may be slipping. Disconnected, it freewheels as it has no load. Mine did that too!

Make sure that it's routed correctly to ensure good grip.

Re: chev tracker alternator

Iknow the belt is not slipping, the belt is tight.... there was an internal meltdown in the one used one I took off.

I got the alternator from Canadian Tire, a nation wide store. Champion brand.

I still think there is some sort of coating on the alternator to keep it shiney that inhibits conduction. The only difference was last time I sanded down all mounting brackets and it worked.

Re: chev tracker alternator

Take it back to Crappy tire and let them test it.Now everything works on your vehicle,no lights out,all instruments work, dome light. If not fix what is not working as the draw could be cooking the voltage regulator, even the connector at the VR should be in good condition. This problem sounds like and ground issue so check all the vehicle grounds that saying the alto checks out as been good.

Re: chev tracker alternator

OK Mr.EET,EE here. You are only sending 20 amps of a 70 amp alternator out the line, so you don't have an excessive external load, yet you are creating excessive heat. A bad ground would give low output but without heat except at the point of the bad ground(I2R loss)certainly not at the pulley. That would make the problem internal to the alternator (not likely because you've replaced several and keep having the same problem)or you've overlooked something.
The first rule of EET troubleshooting is to assume NOTHING. You're assuming that you have a good belt; you don't! These models are notorious for the very same problem you describe. Change the belt! Oh, and the next time it happens(it will), change the belt!
(my tact module is broken today)
