Re: Chevy 8.1

If I'm not mistaken, the 454 is a 7.4L...

I think the 8.1 probably stands for.....mpg....in a 3500 for sure. Don't forget to invest in Shell.
(What about a 6.6 Duromax?)

Gas isn't the only thing they have a thirst for. They also have quite a reputation for drinking more than a little oil.

The 8.1 is a distant derivitive of the 454 (7.4L). The 8.1 is quite thirsty.

One of my customers runs a fleet of Chev/GMC 8.1's and Ford 6.8L V-10's. The V-10's perform on par and get about 2-3 MPG better fuel economy. The Torqueshift transmission behind the V-10 is bulletproof and is proving to be a better trans. than the Allison. Just my real world observation. The owner of the fleet is a true GM fan but he admits the Fords cost him less, in the long haul.

Thanks guys,I thought it was bigger than the 454.Its in a super clean truck i was looking at.I think i will hold out for a diesel if i ever find a good deal on one.
I found a 2002 2500 with a bad knock in the engine for 3200 bucks.By the time i went back to take a second look it was sold. That would have been worth setting a new motor in it.
I'm planning on keeping my Tahoe and getting an older or cheaper truck just to tow and haul with.
