I know, I know, I should have posted under nothing to do with boats, but this is where I hang out...

For those of you who run one, what kind of mpg are you seeing when towing and when not towing? Also how large of a load are you towing?
I'm looking at a 2500HD with this engine and the Allison tranny, just wondering what to expect.

Thanks,

-John

John
My brother has this exact setup. He gets 17mpg not towing. Can't say for towing his 20foot ranger because he added a 110 gallon fuel tank. We towed his ranger to canada for a total of 1200 miles roundtrip and never had to stop for fuel. So sorry I cannot help you on the mileage. But as for towing the 3000 pound lead sled ,the truck had no clue anything was behind it.

I just want to say that the Duramax Diesel with the Allison Tranny is a hell of a good powertrain. I am a commercial truck manager for a GMC dealership in southeastern Wisconsin and they are a very hard vehicle to keep in stock on the retail and commercial end. I have quite a few customers hitting the 20 mpg range unloaded and mid to high teens loaded. If you are close to southeastern Wisconsin let me know, I might have the truck you are looking for.

Nick

I'm not bashing GM.

I have a friend that has one of these trucks and I also have a friend that has a 99 F-350 Powerstroke. After taking a ride in the Chevy, I was not that impressed. The main reason is that the tranny's converter lets fo at 45mph and coasts from there. My feeling is that there would be too much use of the brakes from that speed. My friends F-350's tranny lets go and coasts at 33 and after 60,000 miles he is still on the factory brake pads with plenty of pad left on all four brakes.

That is just my opinion though.

Craig

All,

FYI, Ford gets a new Powersroke in the fall. 6.0Liter with 325 hp. and 525 torque bolted to a 5 speed autoamtic with tow/haul mode and engine braking in four forward gears.

The engine is International/Navistar built.

I own a GMC Sierra, and love GMC's over Ford any day. BUT.....my friend drove both for 2 weeks and said hands down the powerstroke was the better engine. He said the pick-up was much more impressive and responsive in the Ford. A whole lot cheaper too!

Have you seen the new quadra-steer on the GMC sierra denali? Looks like they came up with that just for us boater's, pretty sweet. Also, the 2500 Dodge's will be equipped with the Hemi's for 2003?

Re: Chevy/GMC Trucks w/ Duramax Diesel

I started to reply to this post earlier but didn't really want to bash the GM. I drive a 95 Power Stroke that I bought new. It's got 193,000 miles on it and still runs great. The engine should be good for 400,000 to 500,000 miles. The tranny has never gave me a minutes problem and the only thing that I have ever done to the engine is change the water pump and glow plugs. The newer Power Strokes have more hp and torque. Mine came from the factory with 225 hp. I have made a few modifications since then. Computer chip, K&N air cleaner system and a few exhaust modifications. This truck has pulled many heavy loads for long distances. I go to Colorado about every other year towing a horse trailer loaded down. If you want a real towing test just hook out across the Rocky's with a heavy load.
I've been keeping up with the GMs and there are a few things that I hear that I don't like. I can smoke a Cummins loaded the same in the mountins. I get around 19 MPG unloaded now with all the miles that I have on this rig. If I bought a new truck today it would have to be the power stroke but it looks like I'm stuck with this one. I just can't wear it out.

WHAAAAAAT DID YOU SAY???

I was just parked between a couple of those diesel pickups downtown for a red light and my ears are still ringing from the noise.

Is it a contest to see which manufacturer can make the loudest racket produced while standing outside "the rig"?
