Re: Chevy Techs! Brake wiring help!

Standard brake control wiring is - Black (12v batt), white (ground), blue (service brakes), red (brake lights circuit).

A 20 amp circuit breaker should be used on the black as close as possible to the battery, get a good quality one as cheaper breakers are affected by under hood temperatures. I've seen Chinese breakers trip as low as 8 amps which can be a headache especially if you have tandem brakes on your trailer.

Yep,I will get the breaker and wire it the correct way for piece of mind.just because the 12 volt feed from under the dash is unknown as to how many amps it can handle.
They did work 900 miles wired like that but maybe i was just lucky it didn't hurt anything.
I'll hook up the TT this afternoon and see if i have brakes..:)

Absolutely right. I just rewired my old (83) chev pickup this afternoon for my trailer brakes, as it kept tripping the circuit breaker under hood. Turns out the wiring I put under there 10+ years ago started rubbing on a part of the frame... so, I rewired it all, just to be safe. I don't want to have any problems -- especially when I'm towing.

I'm hooked up to the trailer getting ready to do the 90 mile tow to the dealer.
brakes are working fine but it will get rewired this week before i head back to pick the trailer up.
The terminal the 12v. feed is plugged into does go to the relay box under the hood but i can not determine if its on the correct type relay.
It wont be difficult to run that power feed direct to the battery, just got to pick up the relay for it..

What do you mean by relay?

Just to make sure you're clear, you need a 20 amp automotive self-resetting breaker, like the one below. The black wire from your brake controller goes straight to it and then it goes straight to your battery. You can mount the breaker on your firewall, fender, whatever. Rivets are easiest unless you can find something to piggyback it to...

Thanks! Going to Napa tomorrow and see if they have one,,
The breaks did fine on my short tow today but it worried me.
Electrical and brakes are nothing to take shortcuts on..
