I have a 18 foot 1991 sea ray. I notice a small finger tip size piece of the gel coat was chipped off the bottom of the hull and the fiberglass is exposed in the finger tip sized spot. What should i do? Is this a worry? What should i do to fix it? Is it something i can do myself?

Not a big worry. When you can, get a Gel Coat repair kit, mix up some Gel Coat paste, clean out the chip with some Acetone and plug it with the paste. Sand and polish and you're good to go. Or, if you're not a perfectionist, you can use some PC-11 or Marine Tex both epoxy based products and mix em up and plug the hole and sand it smooth. Or, since it's so small, don't sweat it at all and go boating!!!:D
