Yesterday at my refrigerant supplier, we started talking about how chlorine is surpose to be the killer of O3 or Ozone.

The topic of evaporation of chlorine in swimming pools could also be as harmful to the Ozone layer.

Since the water itself evaporates into the atmosphere, why couldn't it be the carrier of chlorine to the atmosphere?

It is sad that the amount of money spent on this is just a thought and not a proven fact that the Chlorine is the problem. But if it is a fact, then all sources of Chlorine should be considered as a destroyer of the ozone layer.

When R-12 was for sale before the EPA got involved, a 30# container sold for around $35. Before they phased it out in 1999, a jug of it would sell for $685. Half the price went for a refrigerant tax!

This is why everyone is now paying so much for refrigeration repairs.

Was this a plot for the EPA to make money or what. Other countries still produce R-12 and use it.

I don't think Global warming is caused by it. I started heating my house at the end of the first week in October, and I am still heating and probably will still continue (according to the forcast) for the next 2 weeks.

I guess I'm venting due to the extra long cold season this year. :( and I don't think it has to do with freon.........SS

Re: Chlorine and the Ozone Layer

Chlorine is not the problem-it is a complex chemical that was\is chlorinated flurocarbons-CFCs for short. It was suspected that CFCs (which are a gas) were ascending to the upper atmosphere and destroying the ozone layer-I say suspected because it was never proven scientifically. In 1985 the US along with all of the other developed nations signed an agreement call The Montreal Protocol. The Montreal Protocol called for the cease in production of CFCs by 1990 (I believe) by all developed countries. There are still some "stockpiled" CFCs avaiable, but since the chemical is no longer produced costs for the stockpiled material have skyrocketed.
