Choice of gear oil

What type of gear oil should be used in a 1996 mercruiser 3.0L outdrive? Is there a marine and non-marine application oil and is one preferred? Is a certain weight required?

Ok, got that out of the way...

Do a search... You'll find THOUSANDS of threads on exactly this question...

You will also find the answer is almost always... "I use___________ (insert name of favourite oil)...."

Simplest and easiest thing to do is go by the book.... For drives, use Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube.... Yes it's expensive, but so is the drive it's protecting!

Check your manual, if you don't have one, you can download one from here. OR, check with your local Merc dealer.
