HI... I am happy to have found the iBoats forum (have gotten LOTS of helpful / great info) and pleased to be a new member.

My son just purchased (for cheap!) a 1967 Mercury 3.9 HP (model 39) serial number 2192282. Overall in good shape ...as soon as we do a few things - new impeller and a carb rebuild....we are very optimistic it will be great.

I am asking that someone with this motor take and post a picture - or link me to one - that shows how the wire spring associated with the choke mechanism is supposed to fit / be installed. The choke lever is there, as is the brass 2 or 3 inch flat "connector, the choke plate, and the wire spring. I just can't figure out how the spring clips on so that it will stay.

Second, I am hoping someone can help me with specific info - resistances between leads, leads and ground, etc. - as to how to check the coil on this model. It has the magneto ignition with points and condenser, and NO electronic box.

The non-factory manual I have is of no use on either of these ..... grrrrr

Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks.....

I don't have a pic handy, but I'll try to describe it a bit. There is a small arm on the end of the choke lever. That arm (running fore/aft) goes into the oblong hole in the choke plate. The spring's only job is to add tension for a detent effect to either keep the choke open or closed. It clips under the arm on the fore side of the choke plate. The other end of the spring should be under the bolt that holds the choke plate in place and acts as the pivot point.

Thanks, Chinewalker! Your info (good description!), plus close scrutiny of a parts diagram - where I saw that there is supposed to have a spring between the choke lever and the lower motor housing - which keeps the brass connector vertical by holding it snug against the lower motor housing - let me get this working properly. Thanks again!
