Hello everyone,
I have recently got an old jon boat with a 1961 10 HP Sportwin motor. This is my first boat and outboard, so I'm pretty excited working on this thing and getting it into shape. The motor is in pretty good condition, but hasn't been run for a few years. I changed the gear lube, water pump impeller, new plugs (points looked new, probably recently replaced) and gave it a good cleaning. Water tank test was successful, although I had a problem with the choke not staying out when pulled. Took me a while to realize the plastic detent inside the square shaft was broken and did not apply the pressure needed to keep the choke in position. I haven;t gotten a new detent yet, but in the meanwhile a small piece of tygon tubing keeps the choke in place when needed.
My question is about the choke positions. There is a choke link arm link that goes over the throttle lever (I think). You can see it in the attached picture. When the choke is pulled ALL the way out the arm pulls and turns that lever. However, since the detent is not working, the choke never stays in that position and the lever pulls it back in. My question is what is the purpose of the choke pulling that lever, when is it needed, and whether it is designed to be used when cold starting the motor. I also noticed the throttle needs to be in start position for the choke to be able to pull that lever. I was thinking maybe it's designed to add some throttle when starting, and the detent should be able to keep the choke in place until pushed back.
Anyway, I hope I'm making sense, and will appreciate your help.
