Being a novice with boats I need some advice. I have a 1983 Mercury 25hp. There is a control on the front of the motor that appears to adjust the choke (manual setting?) and there is an automatic choke when I push in the key to start the engine. I do not have a manual fo rthe motor but should have one sometime this week. My question/problem ... I started the engine by pushing in on the key and turning it, the engine started just fine, it seems to want to die but just barley stays running. I wait for a seconds and shift into forward. The motor dies and will not restart. After several attempts to start the engine nothing worked. I then moved the manual choke control and the engine started, runs very well. OK now the question, how am I suppose to actually start the engine and what should the manual choke be set to?

Thanks,
Hayden

Re: Choke Problem, 1983 Mercury 25hp

I have a '56 MercElectric, that has the same problem...it has a manual choke as well as a electric choke... the manual states to not choke a warm engine, so if the auto choke works,... then it is in fact choking a warm engine...this problem has been solved by removing the electric choke...and I have to manually choke the engine on cold starting...but not aftrer it is warmed up....sorry about no concrete advice, but just info for you...good luck...
