Hello, I have a 1974 85 hp evinrude. When it first starts up, the engine idles great and at slow speeds it runs great, but when i hit the throttle the engine starts to bog down. I have played with the manual choke lever in the front and when i leave it on, the motor runs Ok but, when throttling down to idle again it runs rough.. it should be in the center position. This DOES NOT happen ALL the time, sometimes it takes right off. Could the choke solenoid be bad? Maybe the carbs dirty? Any ideas would be helpful..I don't want to start replacing if not needed... Thanks
John

Re: choke problems?

it shold be in the center postion as this lets you activate the choke from the shift control, all the way out is manual choke, all the way in is disabled. if you have to choke to keep from bogging, it could be dirty carbs, especially high speed jets, fuel pump failing, sucking air at fuel pump or hoses. if the engine hasn't has decarb with a product like Seafoam Deep Creep it needs one.

Thanks, I thoought it might be the carbs but it does not happen all the the time. sometimes it runs great right from the start. Then the next time (after fishing for a while) it will bog down again..
