1978 70hp Johnson, The spring that attaches from the choke solenoid to the middle carb is missing. Does this normally help keep the reeds almost shut while starting the boat even if you dont engage the choke. The reason why I am asking is that when I start my boat I have to manually close the reeds to about 3/4 closed position to get the boat started, If I dont do this the boat will not start because the reeds will sit wide open which I'm guessing is not allowing enough fuel.

We have a nomenclature failure. The reeds are internal valves and, generally, are not accessable from the outside of the engine. I think what you're referring to as reeds are actually the choke butterflies in the carburetors. Yes, if the spring that attaches the solenoid to the center carburetor is missing, you would probably have to choke the engine manually by partially closing the "choke butterflies" to start.

c/6
Hooty

fsutim

As I said in the other post, is there something keeping you from replacing the spring?

I would really advize you take this engine to a shop. From your early posts, and this one, You are totally lost. I am not saying this as ridacule, but in the long run, you will be better off. These engines are not a kitchen table project.

Re: Choke Solenoid and Carb Reeds.

Sorry about the reeds, I meant the butterflies, the more I talk the more ignorant I sound. I ordered a new spring earlier this week from the local dealer, it should take about a week to get here. I appologize for all the posts, But I finally got her running. I took it out to the lake today and it ran excellent. The only problem was that It wouldn't start unless I manually choked it, but that problem will be fixed soon. I bought a new manual so I'm learning slowly, It doesn't help growing up in a family where your father is so un-mechanically inclined that he cant even figure out how to turn the VCR on. I really appreciate all the help, every reply has slowly helped me learn a little bit more. Thanks for bearing with me. Sincerely, Tim

Heck, I got a VCR, A DVD thingy, and now just got Satellite. I'm afraid to get near any of them now! Wish I could just watch TV again without preparing for an hour before the program comes on! :D BTW: Love it Dhadley!

I apologize for the comment in my post. I was thinking about the people that take on a repair, and ending up paying way more than they could have. The very thing they are trying to avoid. I can't run a VCR either, and I have learned to leave automatic wash machines strikly alone.

R.Johnson

No need to apoligize! Many on this board that ask many questions may sometimes be better off spending a little money to have a professional take a look at it. Sometimes in the long run, it can save you money! But then again, he did get her going and figured it out with help from the good people here, thereby saving at least diagnostic charges. As for the washing machine, I totally agree. Some things are just not meant to be! :)
