Choke solenoid?

I have a early to mid 90's model Johnson 90 Horse outboard here in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and I have a problem with a solenoid mounted on top of the engine that seems to act like an automatic choke??? The solenoid has three rubber hoses coming off of it, two of which go to the carbs and one of which is attached to the fuel filter. The end of the solenoid has (actually had) a red plastic "handle" on it that I assume could be used as a manual choke for whatever reason (???). This red plastic "handle" is broken off and fuel pumps out of the opening when the engine is turning over. The motor will crank and idles and runs fine but it is steadily pumping fuel out of this opening where the red plastic "handle" is missing. My question is this...does anyone know what this part is called? It is a solenoid of some sort, but I can not find it on any parts schematics. The part that the plastic handle is in seems to screw to the actual solenoid and I would like to simply replace the handle if possible and not the entire solenoid. Any suggestions? I apologize for not listing the year and model # but the nameplate is missing on the transom clamp. I will look tommorrow to see if it is still on the engine block. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Choke solenoid?

I think that is exactly the part that I am looking for. It is a primer solenoid apparently. Who knew LOL. In reading a little further about this particular device I found that it is "adjustable" in that it can be set to operate manually or automatically. I think the one on my boat may quit leaking if I turn it all the way one way or the other (I am not certain). It looks like the entire assembly will screw off the actual solenoid. Does anyone know if this is the case? The schematic you linked to looks this way also...

Thanks for the quick response!!!

I don't think the valve assembley screws out. I wounder if your leak is a defective o-ring (#51) ?
You can rebuild those solenoids, parts are available.

Re: Choke solenoid?

It is definitely the O Ring. The red valve is actually snapped off below the housing of the solenoid and I can turn it with needle nose pliers. Do you know if the red valve is held in place with the O ring? There is some sort of cap (Part # 50 A in the diagram you linked to) but it looks like it only closes off the valve for whatever reason (why would it need an opening? For testing?). Does the O Ring slide on to part #50 and then both of them snap into part #49? That is what it looks like....and then part #50 A is a cap to close the system?

Hey man, at least she dosen't sound like your normal gitmo special:) I was stationed there in the late 90's during the cuban/hatian migration episode. did they ever get the golfcourse back or is it still a tent city? Thanks for your service man and watch out for the land crabs, iguanas, and banana rats:) Also, check down at the marina, they used to have a little building off to the side full of old outboards and parts, you might be able to get a hook-up there.

Re: Choke solenoid?

It is just a notch above the average Gitmo Special LOL!! There are a couple of guys here though who can work wonders keeping old boats functional. You are correct about the spare "parts" motors...and lucky for me the rental fleet here has been OMC 90 Horses forever, apparently, because there are literally hundreds of them still being used and almost that many that have been scavaged. I am going to do some recon tomorrow at first light to see what I can find!

The golf course is back in operation and two people can play nine holes for $15 including a cart and clubs if you need 'em!!! The course is kind of "rough" but for $7.50 it is great!!!

Still lots of Iguanas, everyone tells me that that Banana Rats are getting scarce (they seem plentiful to me) and the land crabs are thick. Some of those things are pure evil looking! We have a 6 pound poodle with us and he is going to get ate by one of those things if he ain't careful!

All in all GTMO is a great place to live for a while. I couldn't be happier, especially if I get the gas leak to stop messing up my chum line LOL.

Dunno if it's still there but there was a floating drydock in the SIMA compound, man I remember the tarpon were thick around the dock in that area. Lol, I remember when they brought the 90hp motors in, they all used to be 70's. I remember buying some at auction and making me 1 good motor out of 3:) I spent 2 years there and consider it to be the best duty I had while in the Navy. Have fun bro, your in a great boating, fishing and diving spot for sure:)
