choke

Motor is a 1990 Johnson 175 HP V-6. I think it has what's called Type III carbs.
Anyway, I think I may have flooded it yesterday-wouldn't start, and I was leaving a slick on the water around the motor. Decided to let it sit for a few days-I return tomorow to try again.
Checked out my Seloc manual for info on choke-not very clear-if I take off air silencer, should I see butterflies close when I push in key? or is there a direct injection into cylinders? also, solenoid doesn't seem to move when I push key in-manual says there is a manual override, but it does not show which position is for manual and which is for normal electric. Any help is appreciated!

Re: choke

this was just discussed in a post, but i don't remember where or which way the lever turns. looked in my manual and could not tell. i know on the older motors before primers , on the engine there were 3 position all the way out was manual choke, 1 click in was for the elect. choke all the way in the choke was disabled.

Re: choke

Hi cddetelich

You have a primer system on that motor. When you push the key switch in, it activates the primer selonoid and shoots fuel directly into the cylinders. There are no choke flaps. Your primer will have a red knob on it that is used when the selonoid fails. That way you can prime the motor manually by turning the red lever. Starting procedure with your motor is to pump up the primer bulb until firm, Raise the fast idle lever up, push and hold the key switch for a count of 5 and then turn the key to start the motor.....

Looks like this. This is the normal running position for the Manual prime lever(Red one)

Re: choke

OK Rick-when I hold the key down for 5 seconds and then crank the engine, do I keep the key held down or do I let it spring back to regular position and then turn key?

Re: choke

Continue to hold it in until it starts.....You may have to bump the key in a bit after it starts to keep it running until it smooths out....
