Hope I have this question in the correct category, if not I apologize in advance. My 125 hp Merc 4 cylinder makes a popping noise when I push my ignition in to activate the choke. Is this normal or is something wrong?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Choke

Is this a new noise it did not make before?

Could it just be the choke solenoid activating?

Re: Choke

Mine makes a "clunk".

It's an electro magnet that when activated pulls a hunk of metal that weighs a couple of ounces. It will make a click/clunk kind of sound.

Re: Choke

I am not familiar with your exact motor but I do know that Mercs have used two types of chokes...... one closes a flap over the carb opening and the other is actually not a choke but an enrichment circuit that throws an extra dose of fuel into the block...... the common factor is that you can hear either system when activated.
