Hi guys, new to boating but can tell its a great forum here,

would like to learn more about engines, is there a particular year that would be best looking for when choosing a Yamaha, Merc, Mariner, Johnson or Suzuki outboard motor? I am looking for a 15hp or 20hp 2 stroke and pretty much limited to mid and late 1990s models by budget, earlier than this with the more expensive Yamahas models. It would be for a 3.8m SIB. Wondering about how much benefit injection has over carb too

Cheers

A freshwater, mid 90's Yamaha 2 stroke, 2 cylinder, premix, carbed motor would be hard to beat. Keep fresh, clean gas in it and it's nearly bulletproof! But there's other darn good motors to choose from, depending on how they were used and maintained! Good Luck!:)

Ahoy, Rich Hand.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I don't recall anyone making anything but excellent outboards in that range in the 90s.

I really liked my 1997 Evinrude 15 4 stroke, which I think was a rebadged Suzuki. A little heavy for a 15 (107#), but smooth as a baby's butt, clean and quiet.

The Yammy that Robert recommends would also be an excellent choice if you are stuck on a 2 stroke.

Bon Voyage. )

You won't find a fuel injected outboard in that range.
