I'd have to say 1 merc8.1 kicker with a pair of those 440 hp diesels should do ya fine :)

Diesel..

The Yanmars are probably the most fuel efficient and light weight of the diesels, but, IMO Yanmar quality is marginal at best...

My first choice would be the Volvo D6, followed closely by the Cummins..

The Volvo D6's rev to 3500 is this unusual for a diesel engine? They appear to be equal in speed to the Yanmars does this make sense?

Anyone have experience with these engines and can vouch for which i should choose, naturally this is a twin engine set up.

I think you need to decide petrol/diesel first. Than look at who will do the service.

Re: Choosing an Inboard

I for one would forget the Yanmar. While they do seem to run fine, the price of parts is mind boggeling. Way more than Volvo or Cummins, which are also expensive.
The D6 is a brand new engine and design this year, so there isn't a lot of experience with this one yet. The D6 would be a great engine, it's all electronic controlled and the electronics seem to hold up well in the previous electronic controlled diesels. I'm a Volvo certified tech, and really like their products.
Cummins seem to hold up well, but I don't have much experience with them, so really can't say.
The 3500 rpm's is common on the Volvo and Yanmar diesels.

As far as the 8.1's go.......Don't even think about it in a 38 foot boat.

If the Cummins engines are based on the automotive M11 series then I think that they would be a good choice. Light and good power / weight, 1000's made and plenty of parts available.

Peter
