I am wanting a 4hp for a jon boat just to run trotlines and stuff. I narrowed it down to 3 on craigslist. Wanted yall's opinions. Any known pros and cons of these little motors is appreciated. Because I will probably buy one of them this week.

1993 Evinrude 4hp deluxe with reverse, low hours, no tank included, looks perfect in picture, $425

2006 Nissan 4hp, low hours, 4 stroke, no tank included, looks rough in picture, $500

1995 Yamaha 4hp, 2 stroke, built in tank, supposedly "rebuilt", looks good but not perfect in picture, $300

They are all short shaft and they all claim to run excellent.

Any input is much appreciated.

You can put what I know in the bowl of any one of those motor's carburetors.:p However, before you buy any of those take a look at this website. Another iboater turned me onto it. Not saying don't buy one of the three on CL, they're all good brands. Just sayin'.............;)

I have this motor and it is a fantastic one. I paid $400 for it 5 years ago so that's a pretty good price.

What do you have this motor pushing and what kinda performance do you get out of it?

And thanks for the replies.

I have a little Yami 4hp 2 stroke on my rig as a backup. Runs fine but as a 1 cyl motor it kind of sounds like a chainsaw, especially at high RPMs. You may appreciate a 2 cyl motor as I believe the Evi would be for your main power.

We use it on this 14' http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/DSCF2577.jpg It isn't a speed demon but we've covered quite a lot of water with it even with 3 adults and a child in that little boat. That boat came with a single cylinder Merc 5HP that we HATED. It was super loud and full of vibration. We much prefer the Evinrude.

My vote would be with the John-e-rude. I have a 96' starts & runs fine, real quiet and light wt. I paid $250 on Craigslist w/o gas tank so if you can try seeing if you can talk the person down alittle since its close to Chritsmas, well then again i'm just a cheap sob.
Gd luck

Well I like the way this if going. Because I preffer the Evinrude above the other's for sure. But I couldn't quite justify the extra money for the older motor. But you guys are saying what I already thought. That makes me feel better.

The man with the Evinrude just emailed me. He is at a marina. He says he can sell me a new tank and line with it for $40. I think if I can get him down to 450 for it all I might go buy it.

I appreciate all the input fellas.

Pretty sure that motor is based on the 5.28 cu in 3 hp that dates back to 52.
A wonderful tried and true gem.
