I was up at the lake yesterday and saw a 18ft chris craft utility for sale. called the man up and he said it runs great (chevy 283), bottom looked good, ribs and planking on inside looked good, decking looks fair, nothing rotted but seems starting to open up and some cupping of the planks is ocurring due to lack of sealer. varnish is almost gone... man wants 9 grand, what do you guys think? I know the older ones made in the 30's and 40's are going for $30,000 or more if in mint condition. but I don't know much about the 50's.

To me, 9 large is a lot of loot to spend on something that will make you suffer in the beginning, and the suffering will just go on and on. Around here, I see the occasional wooden boat for sale, and it is almost always a grand or less, they just don't sell here. Granted, they were not Chris Crafts, but they were still wooden boats. Me, unless someone gives one to me, I'll never put myself through that misery. The worst thing about wooden boats is they need to almost always stay in the water. Trailering and launching/retrieving loosens everything up, and they leak like crazy. I you don't have free or cheap moorage, you are S.O.L. But hey, what do I know....

Jason, I totally agree with you. the practical side of this project if i were to keep it, is not too sound. on the other hand, as a project to sell, it may be profitable........I could use a few extra bucks the way the economy has been lately.......I just don't know what these 50 model boats go for......

Flashback...IMHO that's not a very good investment. In order to get the maximum value out of that boat you would have to restore it to better than original condition. I wouldn't pay more than 2-3000 bucks for it, you might be able to break even that way...just a Thought

I just saw in my local paper a Chris Craft of similar vintage going for $5000 or something like that, so 9 large is too much.

Hey Thoughtful, where ya at in the Glorious State of Idaho?

Thanks guys, i thank you. I am a sucker for the old woodies, to me, they are like a drug. I most likely need to go to an AA meeting and get myself straighten out......the darn things are just so beautiful.........thanks
