Hey guys,
Im pretty new here and i just had a few questions on my chrysler outboard. First, let me say that i am in the Coast guard as a "Machinery Technition" so my mechanical knoledge isn't to bad. Anyway, I know the 1307HA was only made from '72 to '73, making parts hard to come by. Now, i know my CD box is bad. That is where my knowedge drops off, Im not to good with CD Ignition. So my question is 1. Where can i find a new CD box or replacent, i know its probably not going to be cheap. So 2. I want to replace the CD box with new automotive parts, so what do i need? And how do i wire them up?

thanks alot!

Re: Chrysler 1307HA questions.

Welcome Aboard!!

a couple of the guys on this forum ( if there are, say 1000 members) 999 are better equipped to answer this :)

being serious, I know that a couple of them have replaced bits, and one member even retro fitted a modern Force ignition system to an older chrysler. My boat, the old owner went the other way, and took OFF the 'prestolite' ignition and installed a Magnapower breakerless ignition system. I know that the other guys here will chip in here, but in essence, what I am saying is that what you are asking is do-able. Is it harder to change to automotive parts, or easier to retro fit a more modern marine part from a 'junker' engine that you may buy for spares? Also, do you need this part

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Force-Ou...at_Parts_Accessories_Gear&hash=item35a2d2850c

I don't know if you need that, but ebay, this site ( iboats), craigs list are a good source of parts for you.

Again, some of the other guys will chip in with a more technical kowledge as to how to do what you want, or with better suggestions.

Welcome to iboats.

Re: Chrysler 1307HA questions.

While that horsepower engine was only made for The limited time, almost everything from four cylinder Chrysler and Force engines is swappable. Even pistons are interchangeable as long as you stick with the correct bore size---3.3125 or 3.375. Your 130 has a 3.3125 bore and a 2.80 stroke. The only other caveat is that the crank from a 125 and 140 had a longer throw and would be swappable only if you raised the ports to compensate.

Mow: Your engine is a distributor engibne with a Motorola CD ignition. ALL ignition parts are swappable and as mentioned, with only a little extra work and modification you can convert to later Prestolit or even Mercury ignition.

Being a distributor engine you also have the option of using high performance auto coils and multiple discharge spark units. But really, with so many junkers around and with ignition systems regularly coming up for sale on ebay, why bother?

You may be able to find a new Motorola CD box at CDI and I would be willing to bet that Franz at franzmarine@aol.com has some good used ones.

The usual failure of the Motorola CD box is the capacitors fail or a gate transistor fails. It would be a simple repair except that the whole thing is potted in epoxy. Because of this the only component salvageable is the case, so a rebuilt/repaired on usually costs just about what a new one would.

NOW: How do you know the CD box is bad? A simple lack of spark does not automatically mean a failed CD box. And just for giggles and your info: CD Means Capacitor Discharge ignition. Within the box, capacitors are charged and when signaled by the transistor they dump this charge into the coil. Since it is faster than regular points and coil ignition, the magnetic field within the coil builds up and collapses quicker inducing a higher voltage in the secondary winding and a higher voltage spark to jump the surface gap plugs.
