Chrysler 135 exhaust vs. prop

OK, new to the forum, sort of new to outboards. I recently bought a 1976 Winner Strike with a '74 Chrysler 135. The engine did not come with an exhaust snout so I bought one on ebay. In the meantime, I took the boat out for a test run and it seemed to do alright, although it was a little sluggish in the lower rpms. Once on plane everything runs great. When the snout came in the mail I went to install it only to find that the prop hits. Is there more than one snout for these engines, or do I need to get the correct prop? I'm guessing prop, but didn't want to look in that direction if I had the wrong exhaust. I'll try to include a picture of the two together. BTW, I didn't post this in the prop forum because right now I'm only trying to see which is the culprit. Thanks for your help!

First off, if that is the correct photo, that is not a 1974 engine it is 1979 or later. There are no different exhaust snouts for these lower units. If you are certain the engine is a 1974, then someone has transplanted it onto a later leg. (something I have frequently done.)

Your problem is not the incorrect prop, it is that the prop you have is a high rake prop. High rake means that in the design of the prop, the blades are tilted rearward for certain performance characteristics. Because there is no exhaust snout on OMC and Mercury engines, these props will easily fit them.

Now: back to your problem. A few months ago I did a post on making a high rake Ballistic prop fit the Late Chrysler/Force one piece lower unit without hitting the exhaust snout.

Search under my name for the post "Thinking outside the box." It shows with photos exactly what is necessary to make the prop clear the snout.

Basically you need to remove the anode from behind the prop and fit a stainless, split, shaft collar in its place. This moves the prop back just enough to clear the snout by about 1/8 inch.

Re: Chrysler 135 exhaust vs. prop

Thank you Frank. As for the year, I am going by the model # (1357HA) and what I found on this site through Google (How I found iboats, actually). Yes, that is a picture of my lower unit that I took this morning, so I guess someone changed it at some point. I will find the post you mention and make those mods. Really didn't want to have to find another prop rith now anyway, since this seems to be a decent stainless unit and my electrician just took too big a bite out of the checkbook...

Thanks for the info!
