Chrysler 20 hp outboard Drive Shaft

My Drive Shaft to my 1969 Chrysler 20 HP outboard broke at the top where the pinion is. Does anyone know where I could find another and what could have caused this? I heard I would possibly be able to get it welded back on but I would rather a new one.

Welding is not a good option. Cruise craigslist and ebay for a complete lower unit--I doubt anyone would be selling a drive shaft by itself. A new drive shaft would cost as much as a complete used lower unit.
