Long story short, I purchased a 45 chrysler (455 hf or hh, cant remember exactly but it has a pointy lower unit gear case) that had a broken lower unit propeller shaft bearing cage. Whole thing was rusted and the main bearing was rusted as well as the gears. Replaced all the seals, inspected the gears for wear and roundness, everything looks sharp. Dog and parts were still operable and work great. New lower unit oil and replaced the impeller while I was down there. Have taken it out a few times since the repair however I find myself constantly adjusting the 2 in connecting coupler that connects the shift lever from the head to the lower unit. It seems as though vibrations are causing it to become loose and change my FNR. Before hitting the water I will adjust the 2 in coupler and locking nut to make sure I have FNR but whenever I run the motor out on the lake and reach a destination, the next time I shift into gear I don't have forward, only reverse and neutral. I'm wondering if any of you had similar issues to this and what your fixes are? I was considering installing 2 nylon lock nuts, one on either side of the 2 in coupler so that it is vibration proof. I will also be taking a look at the shifting and throttle cables for any slack or irregularities.

The shift linkage should be adjusted so you have equal travel of the rod at forward and reverse compared to neutral, that is from the factory workshop manual.
But sometimes when the linkage is worn and have some slack and the dog is worn you maybe have to adjust the linkage so you have a bit bias for the forward gear shift cause it maybe slip if not under load.
I have never have problem with the nut coupler coming loose.
You can try to put some thread locking fluid to it.
