Chrysler 45hp 1980- serial number 457H0L

Hi all, recently fixed the steering problem by stripping it all down and getting everything free and steering works fine put it all back together yesterday. Engine runs pretty sweet but is pumping water intermittent, When I stripped it down the impeller looked fine all intact so I put it all back together.

On the start up it initially started pumping water and coming out the middle hole and then about 2 minutes later it would stop. Shut down the engine then go to start it again a little revs and it starts pumping again but then stops within a few minutes.

Not sure what the problem is I have taken thermostat out just to see if it was that but it didn't really help and is still intermittent with or without it. It started raining so put on hood and came back indoors to make the thread

Hopefully someone can give me tips or lead me in the right direction

Cheers

Are you deep in a 55 gal barrel or in the lake testing as discussed before? I feel water pressure from volume has a little to do with the priming and pumping. I have never had a problem in a lake (even w/o leaving the trailer) or Deep Deep in a 55 gal barrel.

It's in a deep 55 gallon barrel the water intakes are fully submerged, just a bit puzzled about this one.

Can you post a Pic? Is it possible to get deeper? Such as: I had to add 2 X wood under my barrel to bring the water up higher on the motor once.

Was there a water tube issue and is it sealed in place good?

I will try to post video/pictures tomorrow, the seal of the water tube has to be working for it be pumping water i'm assuming, The only thing myself and my father may have thought it would be the key the impeller has was somehow slipping on the shaft but we shall have to look into that tomorrow hopefully weather dependent.

Thanks

Re: Chrysler 45HP 1980 pumping water intermittent

1. Did you take any pics of your water pump?s disassembly and reassembly?

2. My question is how the impeller can slip if the pin is in place connecting the impeller and shaft. Right or wrong
(facing up or down) I feel it is trapped in place.

3. I guess if some resistance was present the impeller could be forced from the brass insert.

4. I c/n think of a way to test or inspect w/o dropping it. Hopefully it?s a water level issue vs impeller issue.

5. Being used in salt water, what was the condition of the housing and old impeller? Smooth I hope.

6. I have heard that an impeller can be ruined ?Quick? w/o water or smooth surfaced in contact with the rubber.

Hopefully someone will jump in with some good info related to troubleshooting. Send Some Rain !o North, TX!

Re: Chrysler 45HP 1980 pumping water intermittent

Went out in the morning, fired up first turn of key. Pumped water straight away and ran for 20 minutes pumping water until I shut it off, seems a bit weird the day before it would stop pumping and then start etc. Only thing I could think of is the water being oily left in the tank as i put fresh in today. Heres a 2 minute video of the engine running. process of uploading heres the link!

I have no explanation except you might have had a few more inches of water due to running pushing water out of the barrel. That appears to be a good dept in the barrel. Do you have a lake or river to run her in close? Keep a close eye on the water flow until you know it?s real. Do you have a over heating sensor on her and know its working?

On the back of the eng is a sensor with an orange wire that works as a ground if the sensor sense above the marked temp. A quick test is to ground the orange wire with the head?s metal with the key on and a horn/buzzer/light should be activated as an over heating signal (I?ll send picks later if needed) .
