Hi all...

Waaaay back (more than a year ago?), I think it was Eurolarva who helped me with some problems with my 67 (?) 45 hp chrysler. I had mentioned in that thread about not liking the gas /oil slick that it leaves beside the dock. Anyway, Euro (?) suggested collecting the overflow fuel that on these motors is normally vented down into the exhaust housing. I think he said he had mounted an external bottle to collect that fuel, but I couldn't find that post with the search function.... So anyway, this weekend I finally got around to trying to figure out a way to do that.

I disconnected the overflow line where it drains into the leg, capped that fitting with a blocked piece of hose and put about a 6" piece of copper line that is the right size to press into that fuel line. I mounted the cap of a small white bottle (small generic vitamin C container) using a couple of sheet metal screws to the outside of the pan, on the port side right at the edge. I put 2 screws through the cap (from the inside of the cap, up into the edge of the pan), and then drilled a hole just a bit larger than the copper tube in between them. Next I poked the copper tube through the hole (it sticks out about below the cap by about 1 1/2"). So, when I screw the bottle onto the cap, it acts a reservoir to collect the unburnt fuel/oil that otherwise would have gone out the exhaust. Occassionally, I unscrew the bottle, and the gas in there (a couple oz's) goes back into the fuel tank. The mounting location for the bottle was chosen so not to interfere with the whole range of steering. Moving it too far forward would mean it would hit the transom on hard left turns. Seems to purge more excess fuel at idle than at high speed (not surprising since 2 strokes work better at higher rev's)... I did tweak the idle mixture, but even when ajusted right it still blows out extra fuel.

It ain't super purdy, (looks mildly weird) but it works. It leaves MUCH less of an oil slick beside our dock (where we swim). That makes us (particularly my "greenish" wife) happy. d:) I left the label on the vitamin bottle, it makes the motor look like a granola health nut. Sorry, no picts... if there's interest, I'll take some next time I go out to the cabin.

Anyway, thanks to Eurolarva (I think) for the idea!!

Re: chrysler 45hp pollution reduction

Yeah it was me and you are welcome. I get people asking me what the hose and bottle is on mine. I use duct tape to hold mine on just to give it that mac Giver look.
