The engine runs great, but doesn't shift into forward or reverse on the lake. it will shift at home, but i cannot get it to shift on the lake. What could be the problem?

Re: Chrysler 55 horse

Did you try shifting the motor during high rpm before the problem started. There is a shift linkage that has a pin in it in the lower unit. If you shifted during high rpm this pin probably broke or fell off the linkage. I bet if you took the lower unit off and tried to make it go into forward or reverse it will not seat all the way and you would be able to turn the prop without the drive shaft spinning. I did this with my chrysler 45 and had to take the lower unit apart. The procedure kind of sucks so I hope it is something else

Good Luck

With the life I'm leading I am sure the boat I ride in hell will have a Chrysler on the back

Check for a sheared pin in the prop, or spun out hub.
