chrysler 55 hp strange problem

hey guys new to the forum here and dont know much about outboards. got a 55 hp chrysler model 557hf. after cleaning and regapping the points and putting on new lines and plugs i got it to fire up weird part is sometimes itll start up but most of the time it doesnt even crank just spins over but if i leave it alone for a while itll start up. any help would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds an awful lot like flooding. Check the fuel pump for a bad diaphragm and check the carb, especially the inlet needle and seat and the float level

Thank you I'll check out the carb tomorrow morning. Another thing that might bit be related the way the last owner wired up the lights on a toggle switch and was grounding out you could see it on the positive battery terminal and before I cut it it would only backfire after I cut it it started right up then the issues I described started.

Quick update went to try and start it wouldn't run more than a few seconds, took carb of checked it everything looked good fuel pump diaphragm is new. Undone the line going into the carb and the pump is working.
