While waiting for parts for other projects on the engine I installed a telltale and a temperature sensor.
On my engine there's a stainless plug right on top of the block and that's where I mounted the telltale. I thought about putting the temp sensor in there as well, in a Tee, but I didn't have one and I was keen to see if there was another place for it.
This plug is pretty hard to remove, most likely been sitting there for 40+ years. Tried a regular screwdriver and heat, then broke two impact driver bits and ended up welding a big nut to it and that worked out.
I think I found a good spot in the by-pass valve cover. usually this would be a bad spot as the water would only reach the sensor when the valve opened.
Mine however had no actual valve inside and looking online I couldn't find one for the 65hp. The parts catalog shows no actual valve for my engine, bigger engines yes, but not mine. I don't think they use on this engine!
I wouldn't recommend this install on other engines but in my case it wouldn't make it worse than it already is, and besides I get to see the actual temp.
When looking inside the by-pass housing I saw a little dimple that turned out to be a clogged up passage to the top of the head. My guess is that it's supposed to vent the air from the top block to avoid hot spots in the block.
I cleaned it out and confirmed there was passage to my new telltale. That means that the block had no way of venting air out before. The new telltale will do the trick now but might as well get things right.
