chrysler 7.5 jumps out of gear

I have a model 72HA ser3985 it runs fine and then at 1/2 power or up will jump out of gear I think, first time I thought the thing came apart, very loud and mechanical. I let it sit for a bit and started and would run fine, then do it again.have not worked on this at all, new to outboards. can these things jump from forward to reverse? it seems to shift fine, but when it does act up it seems like more than just disengaging. any help would be great thanks

If you back off the throttle does it re-engage the prop or does it have to be shifted back into gear?

not sure when it happened the first time I throttled back to kill the motor and it died and kind of kept trying to run so I quickly disconnected the gas line and it finally stopped, kind of strange. I don't think I ever tried to start it again without putting it in neutral, but no when I backed off it stayed in gear and it was so loud and I really thought it just came apart and could not hardly believe that it started and ran again. on the reverse thing, I noticed that when it happened the second time that the motor kicked up some like it would in reverse.
