chrysler 70 hp no start

I bought a 1973 silverline with a 70 hp chrysler outboard. It wasn't getting gas so i cleaned the lines, put in new spark plugs, cleaned the carbs and it backfires once but doesn't start. i have the mixture screws 2 turns out. it has compression.

got it to run for a couple of seconds. When i use the throttle lever , shouldnt it move the linkage on thhe carb and not just the distributer?

Please post some pictures that will show carb and cable relation to your question. Attach is an example of my ref off my 1970 35 HP Chrysler. Pics can tell a lot, such as, is your neutral switch compressed in the cranking process and etc? If it ran a second it is but some other related fuel questions are:
1. Is the fuel tank vent open, the primer bulb is hard, shows good action in the fuel pump?s glass bowl (if it has one)?
2. Have you tried manually priming the engine with some of your 50:1 fuel mix?
3. Is your choke working during the cranking mode from pushing the key in while cranking or etc?
4. Have you checked the fuel pump?s diaphragm for cracks excessive stretching?
5. Do you have any history of how the engine ran last?
6. Have you checked the plugs for good blue sparks? When was it tuned last with a good ignition inspection?

i'll get some pics.
1. primer bulb gets hard, stays hard after cranking. wasnt sure if vent knob all the way out or in was right so i put it in the middle.
2.No, caught my motorcycle on fire doing that.
3. Choke works
4. looked at it when i cleaned the fuel line to get gas to the carbs. looked ok
5.Ran last year, wouldnt start this year so they thought it needed a new motor because it was a Chrysler.
6. has blue spark and new plugs. not much of a points guy.
Also wire from solenoid to starter was loose and causing it to turn over slowly. fixed that.

theres a knob on the control box that says neutral warm up. I pull that out and when i push the lever forward i can see the distributor move, which i assume is chryslers way of advancing the timing but the cam that moves the carb linkage doesn't move. When i push that button in and push the control forward the shifter linkage moves but the cam that moves the carb linkage doesn't.

My personal experience has been with my 1970 35 HP Chrysler. I can see we have differences, even though ?Basics Are Basics?. Hopefully, someone with 70 HP experience will share some info soon.

At the top of the forum posts is a FAQ section. Inside you will find a sticky called link and sync. I suggest you read and apply it to your situation. I would say 8 out of 10 times this clears up ALOT of issues. 2 turns out on the carbs is too much, 1 to 1 1/4 out from lightly seated is all you need.

I started it for a few Seconds and smoke came out the back where the water does , is this normal? It smoked after I shut it off too.
