This is only my 2nd boat so I am fairly new to boat engine repair. However, it seems you guys know about all there is about 'em. I figured I would bounce this off ya for some quick feed back.

I am looking to buy a used boat off a guy. It is a model# 707he 70 HP chrysler which i believe is either a '72 or a '73. I have seen the motor fire right up, has a new starter and plugs, however it seems that the water pump is out or clogged. Or Impeller? When muffs are put on, no water is expelled at all from the top.

He is looking to get $ 800 for the boat and motor since he got a new boat when his father passed. From what I have seen in the area, it appears to be a good deal. Everything else seems to be in great shape. How much do you guys think that would run for the part? WOuld you recommend I do it myself ( I have worked on car and lawnmower engines)? Or would you suggest I defer it to a shop and what would their approx cost be?

Thank you guys in advance!

Chryslers dont put much out the telltale. Usually at idle it is more like a dribble. You should be seeing something come out though. If you take it to a mechanic (most wont even look at a motor that old) it will probably run you at least 100 bucks. The impeller is about 15 dollars. It is not that hard to do but you should get yourself a manual. Here is a link chrysler manual
The syloc is a good manual and you will learn a lot about your motor from it. If you work on mowers you should not have a problem working on this. If you have not bought the motor yet I would go to sears or an auto parts store and get a compression tester. Have him run it in the tank and then do compression on it. All cylinders should blow at least 100 and be within 10 digets of one another. You dont want to buy a blown motor
