My 1973 85 hp chrysler will not start. Most of the time it just turns and will not fire, and about 1 of 5 times it will backfire. Known history: bought it last year guy said its been sitting unprotected for a couple years and he said it needed a starter which I put a new one in. This past winter worked on it, had to adjust the timing and it fired up but was smoking real bad and not peeing water, bought a new impeller and installed it a couple weeks ago but with all the rain (Houston Tx area), just had first chance to give it a go. I did buy a compression tester and checked all three plugs and each came back between 135 to 142, which I thought was outstanding, if not almost too good for its age. My history: exactly zero boating experience (please reply in layman terms!), My wife got diagnosed with breast cancer last year and we decided to start doing some of the things we always talked about, like going to the lake and doing some fishing. Given medical expenses, money is tight but there if we need it. I guess i'm looking to see where you would start next, Thanks in advance.

I would say the key on your flywheel is sheared. When that happens the timing is way off. You will know for sure when you remove the fly wheel.

Thanks for your response Mike...Looks like the flywheel hasn't shifted at all since when we adjusted it the last time and got it going. All the marks still line up correctly. Would it still be possible for the key to be sheared off?

I take it you pulled the flywheel before and marked something before you did? I am not sure what you mean by adjusted it. The flywheel does in one spot and there's a key to keep it there.

Last time I had a similar problem it was the key.

Something else.... Have you put a timing light on it to see if the timing is close or off? That should tell you.

If you had the flywheel off and did not torque the nut to 95 foot pounds when you reinstalled it, then there is a good possibility that the key has sheared. The key LOCATES but does not drive the flywheel. The locking taper that the flywheel is mounted on is what actually drives it. If the nut is not tight enough the flywheel will not lock and will move, breaking the key.

Check the timing, Remove top plug.
Insert screwdriver into hole,
Turn flywheel(by hand) till it pushes the screwy out to the end or max travel.
Then, front of motor above carbs is a timing mark.
It should line up with a mark on the flywheel.
Being that it's old the marks should be there but I'm not positive.
I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will post the right info.

And by all means clean the carburetors. If it's been sitting that long they are definitely gummed up. Very simple to do and pays big dividends on the way these engines run.
