I recently opened up the 65johnson I have and found the trashed piston, head, and cylinder. If you've been following my other post, you know what I'm talking about.

Today I ran into a guy with an 85hp 1980 Chrysler, stainless steel prop, all controls, good compression, was running when recently removed to replace with a larger motor. He is asking $800 for it, is it worth it?
It has a new dis. cap, new CDI box, new plugs and wires, looks very clean and well maintained, power tilt/trim, gone thru lower unit.

He is asking $800 for it, is it worth it? I know he has that alone in parts on it...

Any info will be appreciated. Thanks!
Shawn

I believe that if you look around that you will fine a better brand motor in that age year for a better price. I wouldnt buy it for that much. probably 500 tops.

Shawn, all motors have there problems if they are not taken care of, but it sees like Force has more than there share. i have never had one (thank god)but its like chevy, ford verses kia.

Shawn...look around if you decide not to rebuild. You can do better than a Chrysler. To many problems with them. Go with a motor with a better reputation. Just my opinion.

OBJim

OBJim...

What is a good motor to look for from the mid to late 70's thru the 80's?
I am searching for anything from a 50hp to a 90hp...would like to keep it at about $500, give or take somewhat.

I am probably going to get that 135 johnson, and either sell it or use it as a trade.

Thanks!
Shawn

As far as 50s go I had a 77 50 merc 4 cylinder
That worked great for me till some low life
stole it in the winter of 86.I replaced it with
a 88 50 Evinrude Only problem ive had is starter brushes at about 5 years old. Both motors have been worked hard and given minimal care
and they spent May to December in northern NY out side uncovered all their life.My mothers 87 50
Evinrude lived the same way with minimal
problems. And we are still using it.
