Yeah, immediately drop the bottom of the leg off and replace the impeller..

even if it was brand new when it was left in storage, rubber rots and gets brittle..

also check all the water channels to make sure they are all clean.

And change the oil in the gearcase..

I have a 6hp kicker, and I have alot of repect for it, its a great design and very solid.. so look after it properly and it'll look after you.

rgds

Frank

Chrysler 9.9

I have never owned a boat or a motor before. I was given a 9.9hp Chrysler to put on a 14 foot jon boat. This motor was sitting in a garage for approximately 10 years; should I do anything to this motor before trying to start it? How do I figure out the year that this motor was made, and are the motors noted for having any particular problems?

You'll want to drop the carb bowl and see if there's any gunk in it. The carb will probably need a thorough cleaning before you run it. Remove the spark plugs and spray generous shots of WD-40 in the cylinders, then slowly pull the motor over. Repeat this for a couple days. Check the lower unit lube as well. And I agree with the impeller advice. Get some fresh 87 octane with good oil, (50:1 ratio) and let 'er rip! I have an older Force 9.9 and love it. May want to do a decarb after you get it up and running. A Merc dealer may be able to help with the year, and finding a manual. Good luck!

will probably need a fuel pump too. I'm not sure how crysler fuel pumps work, but most that I know about, will get brittle and not function after couple years of storage.
